Thermoarena is a thermally modified wood manufacturer based in Järva County, Estonia.

We produce over 28,000 m3 of thermally modified wood per year and specialize primarily in exterior design solutions (cladding and decking). 90% of the products are sold to export markets, to more than 30 countries worldwide. We also supply TM hardwood and softwood lumber in different sizes. We’re part of a sustainable supply chain (PEFC license no. PEFC/19-31-36) / FSC® C114364) and expect responsibility and environmental awareness from our partners. All of our wood is produced from well-managed sustainable sources. Our highly experienced employees guarantee the quality of the products in line with customer expectations.

Wood is a renewable natural resource but is also limited to the forest areas which are available. The use of wood as a building material helps to reduce the ecological footprint and promote environmentally conscious behavior. By setting a challenge to notice more of the beauty and functionality of wood in our living environment, the lifespan of the products used must be extended.

Today’s standards set for the living environment undoubtedly have accompanying effects – the production and use of concrete, steel and plastic create a significant environmental footprint. As buildings generate a large proportion of carbon emissions (40%), then addressing the climate problem is crucial for the real estate and construction sector.

There are two ways to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere – to reduce carbon sources and to increase carbon sinks. Wood is a carbon-negative material when it is ethically sourced, processed and used.

First, wood products have an extremely low carbon footprint. Significantly more energy is needed to produce steel, aluminum, concrete and composite materials.

Second, growing trees combine CO2 with water from the soil to form organic wood during photosynthesis. The wooden structure acts as a carbon binder, and the advantage of thermal wood over conventional wood is that it is practically 100% recyclable.

10% more wooden houses would bring enough CO2 savings in Europe to reduce the emissions targeted by the Kyoto Protocol by 25%.

Every cubic meter of wood used as an alternative to other construction materials reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by an average of 1.1 tons. If you add 0.9 tons of CO2 stored in wood to this, each cubic meter of wood saves a total of 2 tons of CO2.

Thermally modified wood opens up new possibilities

A growing number of architects prefer natural and human-friendly solutions and want to avoid using products treated with chemicals.

Wood is natural, and beautiful, has good physical properties and is CO2 neutral. If setting targets to use more wood in construction, one of the challenges is to extend the lifespan of wooden products. Thermal modification ensures a longer service life for wood without the use of chemicals that are harmful to nature.

Thermally modified wood is produced in special high-temperature drying ovens. The result of chemical-free heat treatment is a more stable and durable product, which is also suitable for harsher weather conditions. TM wood is perfect for covering facades and terraces.

In public buildings such as schools, kindergartens, nursing homes, etc., the higher fire resistance of wooden materials is important in addition to durability. We use BURNBLOCK fire retardant impregnation to increase the fire resistance of wood.

Burnblock fire retardant is 100% natural, biodegradable, pH-neutral, non-corrosive and the world’s first Cradle to Cradle Certified® fire retardant.
